Every community has its own story to tell.

Stories help shape the way a community sees itself – where it’s been and where it’s going, its individual personality and perspectives – what makes it different from other places. Or like Library Board member, Susan Zsigmond, said,  “Stories are what give life to a place, a place without stories is nowhere.”

So the reason we do this is to remind one another of our shared humanity, our shared love of this place Big Sur, to strengthen and build the connections between us, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters.

We also hope that the project will help further the understanding of the awesome responsibility that was placed upon the Big Sur community thirty years ago when Leon Panetta, our congressman at the time, said that the long term Protection of the Coast would be left largely in the hands of the Big Sur Community.

We are also creating an invaluable archive for future generations. The sound collages here are a sampling put together to introduce our community to the project – it is not representative of the overall quality or content of the stories as a whole. Some of the short pieces of audio where included to bring some fun the the public event.

We hope you enjoy it.

One of the inspirations for this ‘stories’ project was the BIG SUR SOUND AND STORY event of 2014. Thanks to all who participated in that!
